Kathryn Best - Experiments with Dry Pigments
Kathryn Best is an artist living in the Clonakilty area. She attended Rossa College
Art, Craft and Design course attaining a FETAC award in 2006. Since then Kathryn has
been experimenting with her artwork. During the Art, Craft and Design course Kathryn
(as with many students) was unable to explore her own ideas and creativity as the course
work was quite demanding. However now Kathryn has the time and inclination to pursue
her own artistic agenda.

Kathryn invited me over to talk about her artwork. Kathryn has always been interested
in light and colour, colour being the most important thing. Kathryn was experimenting
with the idea of doing some Batik work however not having the wax at the time decided
to experiment with dry pigments taking her ideas and putting them down onto paper.
Kathryn decided to create these pieces by flicking the dry pigments and using different
stokes and had hours of fun. Kathryn was really pleased with the outcome of her experiments
especially the purples and pinks as these are her favorite colours. Liking the ways they
all blended together.

The next stage Kathryn has planned is to take these ideas and experiments and to put
them onto fabrics, silks and maybe cotton. She is now hoping to recreate these onto
fabrics and then to mount them onto light boxes so that the colours come truly alive
in ambient lighting for rooms. In the meantime Kathryn feels confident enough to share
these experiments with Virtu readers.

Kathryn found that these pieces came very freely once she had decided that she was going
to do it, everything became very spontanious and the creation process was very liberating
on a personal level.
