of South West Cork. It has been handbuilt by Karin and Tony Smith. Virtu - Art
brings to you a source of information about the arts and crafts of South West Cork in
the form of articles, and links pages which can be accessed via the side bars.
Virtu - art has a map of the South West Cork area which we hope to cover.
Information gathering will be ongoing. We are a major resource for artists, art students,
art shoppers and people who just want to know what's going on here in this very special place.

West Cork Inspires Launch of Alison Ospina’s book West Cork Inspires describing the history of the creative

Hickey, presenting work that offers an insight into the crafts movement in West Cork. Guest Speaker: Leslie Reed, former
CEO, Crafts Council of Ireland and founder member of the Society of Cork Potters and of the Cork Craftsman’s Guild on Friday

Wednesday 25 January at 1.30pm Cormac Boydell - - Why am I an artist?
Working as a professional full-time artist since 1983, Cormac Boydell is one of Ireland’s foremost artists working in clay.
He had three solo exhibitions in 2011, at Le Galerie du Don and Centre Culturel Irlandais in France and at the Belltable Arts
Centre, Limerick.
Wednesday 1 February at 1.30pm Etain Hickey and Alison Ospina West Cork Inspires - from concept to delivery.
Etain Hickey, gallery owner and ceramic artist and Alison Ospina, greenwood chair-maker, teacher and author,
will speak about planning, organising and designing a contemporary craft exhibition.
Thursday 9 February at 1.30pm Brian Lalor Irish printmaking and the co-operative studios Brian Lalor, author of
Ink Stained Hands, a definitive study of contemporary Irish printmaking published in 2011, will talk on the development of
co-operative print studios in Ireland and their international significance.

Virtu - Art - Glossary of Art Terms
IRIS PRINT A computer-based printing technique. A digital image is transferred to a sheet of paper using
vegetable-based dyes rather than standard inks. The process uses expensive equipment and can take over an hour
per print, but the final image is of very high quality.
MUSEUM BOARD Multi ply board made of cotton rags or buffered cellulose to ensure chemical stability.
PLASTICIZER Ingredients added to paint to either make it flow or be easily redissolved.
THIXOTROPIC Referring to materials that are thick and viscous while at rest but will flow if brushed, stirred,
or shaken. Resumes its viscous state when the agitation stops.
VIRTU A love of or taste for works of art or curios; a knowledge of or interest in the fine arts as a subject or interest
