Hagen Pelzel - Artist

Hagen Pezel is German Born and living now here in West Cork. Hagen's journey has been one of regaining
balance in his life. Having first visited Ireland together with his wife Eva in 1992 he came to live
here just a few years ago. Hagen sees his past situation, as he puts it as one of "losing the balance
losing his way and getting a second chance in life". Now his artwork is a means for him to keep himself
balanced, "to express things and also to a very high degree a means of gratitude. Gratitude in a spiritual
sense, gratitude to God". Hagen's artwork reflects his deep spirituality and journey through difficult and
now better times. Hagen comments that when he was young he had a relationship with Christ and that
Christ was important to him and now on reflection can see how God had guided through difficulties
and of being a constant through different stages and dangers. "My whole life journey God was a
constant." Hagen grew up in Berlin and later moved to Freiburg where he met his wife Eva and studied law.
Eventually he became a lawyer. Hagen says "you know this is a different world (one very removed from
his life here)".
At one stage Hagen said that he really lost his connection to God. At this time he feels that he
went in the wrong direction arriving at a dark place. We all have choices and decisions to make
and at a very important point in his life he made a wrong decision. One which he should have known
was not the right decision. At that time God gave him a lot of signs and a lot of things happened
to warn him to hold him back, to lead him back but as he says he was really blind and his heart had
grown cold in some way. And he continued unchecked until events lead to life changing situations.
From that point on Hagen has turned his life around. Hagen now lives a life of grace, to get a
second chance and to get his soul back as he says he was in a dark space and almost lost his soul.
Losing your soul means losing yourself. Hagen having been in-to art from an early age he returned
to the paint and brushes as a way of connecting with his inner being. Hagen believes that being
artistic and creative is a gift and as such you have a duty to make use of it.
Hagen would also like to mention a friend back in Berlin, Felix von Quernheim, who first encouraged
him to take up painting again, and Sarah Iremonger, artist, whom he met when he was living in Cobh.
Sarah gave hagen valuable advice and recommended him to take an arts class at Joe Creedon’s "Daniel
Corkery Summer School" in Inchigeelagh. And last not least his wife Eva who died in 2002. Without
her I would not be alive anymore and without her Hagen says that "I would have never been able to
move to Ireland".
Hagen was inspired and drew energy from an exhibition in Cork Opera House called "Better Late Than
Never" in 2005 featuring artists Paddy Campbell, Matt Lamb and Bill Griffin. "I can see some
similarities between Matt Lamb's life-journey, his message and mine".
