Etain Hickey Collections - Gallery + Craft Shop

Etain studied at Dun Laoghaire School of Art and Design, and is a member of the Crafts Council of Ireland and the West Cork Craft and Design Guild. Her work has been widely exhibited both in Ireland and abroad. A series of her decorated bowls were purchased by the Department of Foreign Affairs for presentation to dignitaries. Etain Hickey and Jim Turner share the resources of Rossmore Pottery to produce their pieces. Jim Turner is a teacher of ceramics and sculpture for the Art, Craft and Design students at Rossa College, Skibbereen.

Etain Hickey Collections - Carrol Boyce Cutlery

The motivation behind opening the shop was that the whole market is changing. There is a shortage of outlets for artists for instance there is no outlet in Cork city for this work. Knowing there are so many talented people, lots of work and very few outlets. The Shop primarily giving space to her own and Jim's work, then for all the rest as they come. Etain would like to promote the talents of this area of West Cork. People generally do not appreciate the hand made things, the time that goes into a piece. The quality is a big thing and it must be well made and well finnished.

When Etain opened in June with mostly exhibition pieces mixing a lot of paintings and glass, which is very popular. And of course ceramics, people mostly know Etain and Jim for their ceramics.

Carrol Boyce - Cutlery was a new supplier with male and female pieces which must be seen. Etain had a small order in and it went off the selves straight away, very collectable.

Etain will exhibit unknown artists if she likes thier work particularily if they are from West Cork, after that other Irish artists. She does have a few imports but not many.

Etain likes to offer new artist space along side established artists, she likes to mix things together and does this to great effect throughout her shop and gallery space.

Alison Ospina's small greenwood chairs are featured. Alison teaches her skills to the Art, Craft and Design students in Rossa College in Skibbereen.

Julian Smith's Raku Ceramics are quite haunting so different, almost like marble art. With the raku firing you always get different results. Julian's pieces are very tactile.

Paintings by Eadaoin Harding Kemp, a local artist making a name for herself with a big exhibition on in Dublin at the moment. Her work can be viewed here in September. Very well known for her paintings of poppies, but she does landscapes as well.

Jim Turner's paintings are also going to be shown mid August to mid September.

Things are very differnet now for Etain from spending most of her time in her studio at Rossmore to only one day a week to do her own work, the rest of the time now in the shop.
