Alice Gillilan - Artist - Skibbereen

Alice Gillilan - Artist - Skibbereen

Virtu - Art first met Alice Gillilan at the Lisselan Garden Festival in July The following month this artist contacted us wanting to join our ever growing community of artists and crafter's. She has a vast and long experience of being a working artist having sold widely all over the world, mainly on commissions. Alice (now in her sixties) resides in Skibbereen

Alice attended Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and graduated with a B.A. In illustration. Since then she has had a varied career illustrating for various publications, including a ghost book which she not only provided the artwork but designed the cover for. She has exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery having won a competition to do so, and has also shown at minor shows including one in the Royal academy as well as in some rural shows in the UK.

Alice paints under the name of Liss and her artwork reflects her interest in "people and nature". She once got a commission from a zoo in England where she was commissioned to create a visual record of the animals, in pen and ink. Such animals as lions, porcupines, ant-eaters and the like and she has done several caricature portraits in historical costume themes for local fetes and carnivals. After some years off regular creativity Alice returned to College after her children had left home to attend a Social Arts course at Dartington College, Totnes which led her to teaching Arts and Crafts for the Royal National Institute for the Blind while at the same time holding a tactile exhibition that also included taste and sounds to give the ordinary sighted person in the street the experience of suffering from sight loss. This was a great success especially with children!

Alice's home is full of her artwork, all walls and surfaces are covered and she Often open her home up to visitors especially when the weather is fine and has made quite a few sales in this way. If you would be interest in seeing Alice's work on this way you can her number beforehand to make an appointment.

As already mentioned Alice's artwork is signed under the name "Liss" at the bottom of her paintings. Alice's artwork has no boundaries, her styles are dictated to by the subject matter or the medium that she uses at that time so the viewers may at first seem to wonder what makes this artist tick, but closer inspection reveals the living, breathing intricacies of Nature in its purest sense.

For commissions and other contact for Alice please apply via Virtu - Art and email us and we will contact Alice on your behalf.
